Scratches on Ray-Ban lenses: what you can fix, and why toothpaste is a bad idea on polarised lenses
Most marks on Ray-Ban lenses turn out to be dried grime, not scratches, and those wash off safely. Real scratches cannot be polished out of coated or polarised lenses, so this guide shows how to tell the two apart, clean properly and when a lens replacement is the honest answer.
Wash the lenses with lukewarm water and a drop of mild hand soap, dry with a clean microfibre cloth, then look again under light. If a line is still there and you can feel it with a fingernail, it is a real scratch and no home remedy will remove it; toothpaste or baking soda only grinds away the lens coatings and can leave a hazy patch. For scratches that bother your vision, ask a Ray-Ban store or authorised optician about genuine replacement lenses, since Ray-Ban's India warranty does not cover scratches on sun lenses.
1. Rinse off grit before you touch the lens: Hold the glasses under a gentle stream of lukewarm water for a few seconds. Wiping a dry lens drags any dust or sand across the surface, and that is how a lot of new scratches begin. Do not use hot water, as heat can harm lens coatings.
2. Wash with a drop of mild soap: Put a small drop of plain hand soap or lotion-free dish liquid on your fingertips and gently rub both sides of each lens, the nose pads and the frame edge where sweat and sunscreen collect. Ray-Ban's India FAQ suggests ordinary hand soap or a glasses cleaning spray with detergent, and warns against hand sanitiser and household cleaning sprays because they can damage the lens surface.
3. Rinse well and dry with microfibre: Rinse until no soap is left, since leftover soap dries into smears. Shake off the water and pat the lenses dry with a clean microfibre cloth. Avoid tissues, paper napkins, your dupatta or shirt, which can leave fine marks and lint.
4. Do the light and fingernail test: Hold the lens under a bright light and tilt it slowly. Smudges and residue move or vanish after cleaning; a scratch stays as a sharp line. Run a fingernail lightly across it. If your nail catches, the scratch has gone through the coating and possibly into the lens itself.
5. Leave fine hairline marks alone: Very light marks that you only notice when the glasses are off your face usually do not affect your vision. Wearing them as they are is better than trying to buff them out, because every rubbing attempt removes a little more of the coating and spreads the damage.
6. Do not use toothpaste, baking soda or glass polish: These work by grinding the surface down. On a polarised Ray-Ban, that surface carries coatings such as anti-reflective or mirror layers, and wearing them away leaves a cloudy patch that blurs vision more than the original scratch. On glass lenses, household abrasives are unlikely to reach the scratch at all; they just dull the surrounding finish. Wax-type scratch fillers only hide marks for a short time and can distort what you see.
7. Check your warranty before paying for a fix: Ray-Ban India warrants sunglasses for two years against breakage from defects in material or workmanship, but the warranty clearly excludes scratches on sun lenses, accidental damage and normal wear. A cracked lens from a manufacturing fault may be covered, so keep your invoice handy and call Ray-Ban customer care if you are unsure.
8. Ask about genuine replacement lenses: For deep scratches in your line of sight, the only real fix is a new lens. Take the glasses to a Ray-Ban store or an authorised optician with the model number from the temple arm and ask whether original replacement lenses are available for that frame. Ray-Ban says lens fitting should be done by Luxottica or an authorised dealer, and cheap lenses from unknown sellers may not offer the same UV protection.
9. Protect the new lenses from the start: Always put the glasses back in their hard case instead of tossing them into a bag, and never rest them lens-down on a table. In summer, do not leave them on a car dashboard, where heat can stress the coatings and frame. Rinse off sea water, sweat and sunscreen the same day.
