Wet wipes are a quick way to keep white sneakers fresh between proper cleans. Here is how to use them safely on leather, canvas and mesh, and when to reach for a brush instead.
Use plain, alcohol-free baby wipes or wipes made for sneakers, never bleach or disinfectant wipes. Knock off dry dirt, take out the laces, then wipe the upper and sole edges in small circles and let the shoes dry at room temperature. Wipes are for quick touch-ups, so use a soft brush with mild soap for stubborn marks.
1. Knock off dry dirt: Tap the soles together outdoors and brush off loose dust and dried mud with a dry soft brush. Wiping over grit just smears it.
2. Remove the laces: Take the laces out so you can reach the tongue and eyelets. Set them aside to wash separately.
3. Wipe the upper in small circles: Use a fresh wipe and work in small, gentle circles across the upper. Switch to a new wipe as soon as one looks dirty.
4. Wipe the midsole and sole edges: Run a wipe firmly along the midsole and the edges of the sole, where most of the grime collects. Use another wipe for the bottom if you want.
5. Tackle stubborn scuffs: If a mark won't shift, dip a soft toothbrush in lukewarm water with a little mild soap and scrub gently. Wipe away the foam with a clean, damp wipe.
6. Wash the laces: Rub the laces with mild soap and lukewarm water, rinse them and hang them to dry.
7. Dry at room temperature: Stuff the shoes with paper to keep their shape and let them air dry indoors. Keep them away from direct sun, heaters and hair dryers, which can yellow, warp or shrink them.
