HP Victus or Pavilion Gaming laptop overheating in Indian summers: what to check
Gaming laptops like the HP Victus and Pavilion Gaming run hot by design, and a 40 °C afternoon in May makes it worse. These checks, based on HP's own advice, help you cool things down and spot when the fan itself has a problem.
Put the laptop on a hard, flat table with space around the vents, blow the dust out of the vents with canned air, and close heavy apps you are not using. In OMEN Gaming Hub, use Balanced or ECO when you are not gaming, since Performance mode adds heat and noise. If a fan growls, stops, or the laptop keeps shutting down, stop using it and get it checked.
1. Move it to a hard, flat surface: HP warns that a bed, pillow, sofa cushion or your lap can partly or fully block the air going into the laptop. Use it on a desk or table instead. HP suggests leaving roughly 15 cm (6 inches) of free space around every vent.
2. Cool the room, not just the laptop: In peak summer, keep the laptop away from direct sun, a sunny window or the area right under a hot tin roof. Play in the coolest room you have, with a fan or the AC on if possible. A hotter room means the laptop's own fans have less cool air to work with.
3. Blow the dust out of the vents: Shut the laptop down fully and unplug the charger. Use short bursts of canned air on the vents on the sides, back and bottom. HP says you do not need to open the laptop to do this. Dust builds up faster in dry, dusty months, so repeat it every few weeks.
4. Listen to the fans after restarting: Turn the laptop back on and listen. A short burst of loud fan noise at start-up is normal. HP says a fan that makes a loud growling sound or does not spin at all has a problem, and you should stop using the laptop until it is looked at.
5. Close heavy apps and trim start-up programs: Running many apps at once, or a demanding game, makes the processor and graphics chip work harder and hotter. Close programs and browser tabs you are not using. Open Task Manager, go to the Startup tab and turn off apps that do not need to launch with Windows.
6. Pick a calmer mode in OMEN Gaming Hub: Victus laptops use OMEN Gaming Hub. Under Performance Control, choose Balanced for daily work or ECO when you are not gaming. HP notes that Performance mode pushes the CPU and GPU harder and can raise heat and noise. On select models, pressing fn + P opens the power mode menu without opening the app.
7. Lower in-game graphics settings: If the laptop only gets very hot during games, drop the resolution or graphics quality a step or two, or cap the frame rate in the game's settings. HP suggests this for laptops that run warmer than usual while gaming. You may lose a little sharpness but gain a cooler, steadier laptop.
8. Update the BIOS and graphics driver: Open HP Support Assistant and check the Updates section, or download updates for your exact model from HP's Software and Driver Downloads page. Install BIOS and drivers only from HP, and keep the charger plugged in during a BIOS update. HP warns that the wrong BIOS can stop a laptop from starting.
9. Run HP's fan tests: Restart the laptop and press F2 repeatedly to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics. Run the component tests for the fan, such as the Fan Speed test and Fan Thermal test. A failed result gives you a code that is useful when you contact HP.
