iPad not charging, or charging very slowly: what to try
Most iPad charging problems come down to a weak adapter, a tired cable, heat or a computer port that cannot supply enough power. These checks follow Apple's own order and take about 15 minutes.
Plug the iPad into a wall socket using the adapter that came with it or an Apple USB-C adapter of 20W or more, and try a different cable. Keep it out of heat, because an iPad pauses charging when it gets too warm. If it still will not charge, force restart it before you contact Apple.
1. Look for the charging symbol: Plug the iPad in and wait a minute. A lightning bolt beside the battery icon, or a large battery on the Lock Screen, means it is charging. If you see nothing, carry on with the next steps.
2. Use a wall socket, not a laptop: Plug the adapter straight into a wall socket. Laptop USB ports and unpowered hubs often cannot give an iPad enough power, which is why it may show Not Charging there. Skip extension boards that are loose or overloaded.
3. Swap the cable and adapter: Try a different cable first, then a different adapter. Small phone cubes are too weak for an iPad. Use the adapter that came in the box, or an Apple USB-C adapter of 20W or higher. Cheap unbranded chargers are a common cause of slow charging.
4. Check the port for fluff: Shine a torch into the charging port. Lint and dust from bags pack in tightly over time and stop the plug from seating fully. If you see debris, ease it out very gently with a wooden or plastic toothpick. Never use a pin or anything metal.
5. Let it cool down: Apple designs iPads to work between 0 and 35 °C. In Indian summers, a hot car or a sunny window sill can push it past that. A hot iPad may show Charging On Hold and pause until it cools. Move it somewhere shaded and try again.
6. Force restart the iPad: With a Home button: hold the top button and Home button together until the Apple logo shows. Without a Home button: press and release the volume button nearest the top button, then the one farthest from it, then hold the top button until the Apple logo appears.
7. Charge for an hour, then test: Leave the iPad plugged into the wall for at least an hour without using it. A badly drained battery can take a while to show any sign of life. If the level still does not rise, it is time for a professional check.
