JBL Flip 5, Flip 6 or Charge 5 not charging or not turning on: what to check
A JBL Flip 5, Flip 6 or Charge 5 that will not charge or power up is often down to a damp or dirty port, a weak cable or a tired charger. These checks help you rule those out before you think about service.
Dry and clean the USB-C port first, then try a different cable and a wall charger rated at 2 A or more, and leave the speaker on charge overnight. If it then lights up but acts oddly, a factory reset can help. If nothing lights up at all after a long charge with good accessories, the battery or charging port may need JBL service.
1. Dry the speaker completely: These speakers are built to handle water, but JBL says the charging port must be fully dry before you plug in. If the speaker has been near a pool, in the rain or out in monsoon humidity, wipe it down, stand it with the port facing down and let it air dry. A table fan pointed at the port speeds this up.
2. Look into the port and clean it gently: Shine a torch into the USB-C socket and look for sand, lint or a green or white crust. JBL's cleaning advice uses a cotton bud lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol until the port is clean and dry. Do not dig hard or use metal pins, since bending the contacts can stop charging for good.
3. Swap the cable: JBL notes that a faulty cable is one of the most common reasons a speaker will not charge. Try a different USB-C cable, ideally one you know charges your phone properly. Very thin or very old cables may not carry enough current.
4. Use a proper wall charger: None of these models comes with a charger in the box, only a cable. JBL suggests a USB charger with at least 2 A output, plugged into a wall socket rather than a laptop port or a cheap multi-plug. The Flip 5, Flip 6 and Charge 5 are all rated for 5 V / 3 A charging, so a 15 W adapter is a good match.
5. Charge it overnight: A speaker that has sat unused for months can be so flat that it shows no light at first. Leave it on the charger for a full night, about 8 hours, before you decide it is dead. For reference, JBL quotes about 2.5 hours for a full charge on the Flip 5 and Flip 6, and about 4 hours on the Charge 5.
6. Watch for beeps and flashing on the Flip 6: The Flip 6 has USB-C charging protection. If it senses water, salt or other chemicals in the port, it plays a warning sound and flashes its lights. Unplug the cable, dry the port fully and try again later.
7. Do the wiggle test: With the cable plugged in, move the plug very gently. If charging flickers on and off, or the plug feels loose, the port may be worn or damaged. Stop there, as forcing it can make things worse, and take it for service.
8. Factory reset if it powers on but misbehaves: If the speaker now turns on but freezes, will not respond to buttons or cuts out, remove it from your phone's Bluetooth list first. Then, with the speaker on, press and hold Volume + and Play together for more than 3 seconds. It will switch off and return to factory settings, and you will need to pair it again.
