PS4 Pro loud fan (jet engine noise): cleaning, placement and when to get it serviced
A PS4 Pro that roars like a jet engine is usually short of air: blocked vents, dust or a hot room. This guide covers the placement and cleaning steps Sony recommends, the settings worth trying, and the signs that it needs a service centre.
Give the PS4 Pro at least 10 cm of space from walls, take it out of closed TV cabinets, and clear dust from the vents with a low-powered vacuum while it is unplugged, as Sony's safety guide advises. Keep it updated and, in a hot room, play when it is cooler or with the AC on. If it still screams, shows an overheating message or shuts down, contact PlayStation support rather than opening it, because Sony says opening the casing ends the guarantee.
1. Work out whether the noise is normal: The fan speeds up when a demanding game works the console hard, so some extra noise in big open-world games is expected. Listen on the home screen for a minute, then in a lighter game. If it is loud even on the menu, or the sound is a grinding, rattling or clicking noise rather than a whoosh of air, the console likely needs attention.
2. Give the console room to breathe: Sony asks for at least 10 cm of space between the console and any wall. Do not use it inside a closed cabinet, a tight shelf or anywhere heat collects, and never cover it with a cloth. Avoid soft rugs with long fibres, which block the vents underneath. Keep it flat or upright on Sony's vertical stand, as the safety guide does not support other positions.
3. Unplug it and wipe the outside: Turn the PS4 Pro off fully, not in rest mode, and pull the power cord from the wall by the plug. Wipe the body with a soft, dry cloth. Sony warns against solvents, chemicals and chemically treated cleaning cloths, so skip glass cleaner and sanitiser wipes.
4. Vacuum dust off the vents: With the console still unplugged, run a low-powered vacuum over the vents at the front edge and back to lift out the dust that has built up. Use a soft brush nozzle and do not press it into the slots. Keep the area around the console dust-free too, because Sony notes that dust and cigarette smoke build-up inside can cause faults.
5. Beat the heat in summer: Rooms in many Indian cities go above 35 °C in April to June, which is beyond what Sony rates the console for. Keep it away from windows with direct sun and from hot appliances like set-top boxes or amplifiers stacked on top. Playing in the cooler part of the day or with a fan or AC running often brings the noise down noticeably.
6. Update the system software: Go to Settings > System Software Update and install anything available. Sony recommends always keeping the console on the latest version, and updating the game itself through its options menu is also worth doing.
7. Ease the load in Pro-only settings: The PS4 Pro has extra performance options. Boost Mode is under Settings > System, and Supersampling Mode is under Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings. If you turned these on, try switching them off and see whether the fan calms down in your usual game. Graphics may look slightly less sharp in some titles.
8. Watch for an overheating warning: Sony says the console shows a message when its internal temperature gets too high. If you see it, turn the PS4 off, move it somewhere with better airflow and let it cool before playing again. A message that keeps coming back after cleaning, or a console that switches itself off mid-game, is a sign to stop and get it checked.
9. Get it serviced if the noise stays: PlayStation support in India can be reached on 080 6500 6500 (Monday to Sunday, 9:00 to 19:30) or by email at sonyindia.care@sony.com for system issues. Have your model and serial number ready. Sony's guide says there are no user serviceable parts inside apart from the hard drive and that opening the casing voids the guarantee, so deep cleaning the fan or replacing thermal paste should only be done by a technician you trust, knowing that any official cover will end.
