PS5: turn off Console Sharing and factory reset before selling
Before you hand over a PS5, it should no longer be your account's main console and it should be wiped back to factory state. Both are done from the PS5 settings in about 20 minutes.
Back up your saves, then go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play and choose Disable. Next, open Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options > Reset Your Console. If the PS5 is already gone, deactivate it from Device Management in your PlayStation account on the web.
1. Back up your saves and sync trophies: Upload your game saves to cloud storage if you have PlayStation Plus, or copy them to a USB drive. Open your trophy list once so it syncs. Your games and purchases stay on your PlayStation account, not on the console.
2. Write down the serial number: Sony suggests recording the console's serial number before you part with it. Snap a photo of the label. It helps if you ever need to prove the console was yours.
3. Turn off Console Sharing and Offline Play: Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play and choose Disable. Sony says this does not delete data or harm the console. It simply frees your account to set another PS5 as its main console.
4. Take out your own M.2 SSD (optional): If you fitted an extra M.2 SSD and want to keep it, remove it now. A console reset does not wipe games stored on that SSD, so either take it out or format it before selling.
5. Reset the console: Go to Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options > Reset Your Console and confirm. This wipes every user and all data and cannot be undone. Note that Restore Default Settings is different; it only resets settings and is not enough for a sale.
6. Hand it over at the first setup screen: After the reset, the PS5 starts at its first-time setup. Switch it off there so the buyer sets it up with their own account.
